7 Reasons Why Coaching May Not Help You

So, you’re considering hiring a coach.  But you’re not quite sure if coaching will work for you.

Hiring a coach and investing in yourself is a huge commitment, and you need to be sure that you’ll get the results that you’re looking for.

I honestly believe that coaching will help anyone to achieve their goals, BUT there are some instances when the person will definitely not reap the benefits of coaching.

So, before you take the plunge consider these reasons why coaching won’t work for you.

You're not honest with yourself

If you’re not honest with yourself, you wouldn’t be able to get to the heart of what is holding you back from achieving your goal.  Equally important is being honest with your coach.  Because your coaching session is tailored to you and your goal, if your coach doesn’t know what’s truly holding you back, they would not be able to give you the support that you need.

You're not willing to do the work on yourself

Sometimes clients expect the coach to “fix” them or their problems.  The bad news is that this is not how coaching works.  You are responsible for doing the work on your yourself and as your coach I will hold you accountable for doing the things you need to do.

You want someone to tell you exactly what to do

More bad news!  Your coach may not tell you exactly what you need to do to move forward, but they will help you identify solutions.  We will brainstorm together what your next step needs to be.  But you need to decide what your next steps need to be.  You have to take responsibility  and have to become accountable for your own growth.

You're not able to make time for your sessions

If you don’t make time for your sessions and constantly move or cancel sessions, it shows that you’re not committed to the process.  You won’t get the full benefit of the coaching if your sessions are inconsistent and are too far apart.  Sometimes clients start postponing session because there is something that they are not willing to deal with yet.  This hesitancy to confront something uncomfortable is natural and it’s important that you raise this with your coach.  If you don’t deal with this, you won’t be able to move forward.

You don't want to be challenged

If you only want to be told how fantastic you are, and you don’t want someone calling you out on your BS, or someone who challenges your way of thinking, then coaching is most definitely not for you.  As your coach, I will challenge you – to change your thoughts and the beliefs that are holding you back; to step out of your comfort zone  and to push yourself.

You don't want to leave your comfort zone

Going through the coaching process is uncomfortable.  To get from where you are to where you want to be, you will need to step outside of your comfort zone.  You will need to change the habits and thoughts that don’t support you, and you will need to dig deep to get to the root of the things that holding you back.  Your coach, though, will be there to support and motivate you.

You expect results to be quick

Change doesn’t happen overnight.  If you’re trying to get fit, going to the gym once or twice isn’t going to show any changes.  It’s the same with working on yourself.  It’s taken you a lifetime to develop your habits and behaviours.  Changing them will not happen after 1 or 2 sessions.  Go into the coaching with the expectation that it will take some time.  Don’t give up - commit to the process and to doing the work and you will see the changes you need.

If you feel that none of these apply to you and you’re ready to take the first step towards a goal, get in touch to book an obligation free call to see how coaching can help you move forward.
