Time for a mid-year review

It’s normal to be excited and energised about setting your goal and achieving it at the beginning of the year. But as the months progress and you continue taking the necessary actions to achieving it, you might find that some things change.

A mid-year review is the ideal time to re-focus on your goal. It’s the perfect opportunity to tweak your goal, understand what’s working, what’s not working and to look back at your successes.

Step 1 – Review your goal

Is your goal still relevant to you? Are you still inspired by it

Remember that your goal is not written in stone. As you progress and work towards it, your needs might have changed or you might have changed. Or perhaps, with hindsight, you will review your goal with more clarity. Reset your goal so it remains relevant and gives you fresh inspiration.

Remind yourself of your WHY.  Remember why you set your goal in the first place. Reflecting on your WHY reminds you why you wanted to make the change in the first place and inspires you to get motivated again.

Step 2 - Review your milestones

Milestones are the steps you need to take to achieve your goal. In our coaching sessions, once the goal has been identified, we break it down into steps or milestones that you need to complete to achieve your goal.

Review the milestones you had identified and see if they are still     :

       appropriate to your goal;

       achievable; and

       still challenging.

If you are achieving your milestones quicker than you had anticipated, you can add more milestones or change the deadlines for them.

If achieving your milestones is taking you longer than expected, re-evaluate them to ensure they are still relevant and change the deadlines if you need to.  But DO NOT make excuses for not achieving your milestones.

Step 3 - Recognise your achievements

During your mid-year review, take the time to acknowledge your achievements no matter how big or small they are.

Look back at how far you’ve come and acknowledge your journey. Review the challenges that you confronted and overcame.

Reflect on how you’ve changed as a person. Whenever we work towards a goal, we change and grow. Acknowledge and celebrate your personal growth.

Step 4 - Plan the next 6 months

Now that you’ve reviewed your goal and milestones, plan the next six months.

What do you still need to do to achieve your goal? Schedule these tasks in your calendar for the next six months so you can allocate the time to work on them.

Has anything prevented you from reaching any of your milestones?

How can you ensure that this doesn’t happen again?

Is there anything that might, in the next six months, prevent you from achieving your goal?

How are you going to deal with this?

What to do it you are not on track

Firstly, don’t panic 😊 Make a list of all the things you need to do to get back on track.

Understand what’s holding you back. Do you procrastinate? If so, why? Is there an element of fear causing this?  What is it that scares you and how can you deal with it?

If you aren’t motivated anymore, understand why. Does your goal not inspire you anymore? Maybe you’ve outgrown your goal? Yes, it can happen!

If you’re feeling that it’s getting too difficult to continue, understand why you’re feeling that way.  Are you uncomfortable because you’re edging closer to making a permanent change and the thought scares you?

Remember that growth happens in difficult times, and it could raise fears of what will come next.

Perhaps your goal was too ambitious and you’ve realised that you need to re-evaluate your goal. There’s nothing wrong with a reality check.

Perhaps your goal wasn’t challenging enough and you’re no longer inspired to complete it.

List three things you can do to get back on track and do them to regain your momentum.

Perhaps you should consider working with a coach to get you back on track.

Make your mid-year review a regular habit, and perhaps even try to do a review every three months. By making your personal review a regular habit you can ensure that you stay on track and  focus on building the life that you want.
