Overcoming Procrastination

Procrastination is a common problem for people of all ages and backgrounds, but it can be especially harmful for leaders. When leaders procrastinate, it can delay important decisions and projects, and it can also send a message to their teams that it's okay to put thing off until later.

As a leadership coach, I've helped many clients overcome procrastination. Here are a few tips from my experience:

1.  Identify your triggers. What are the things that typically make you procrastinate? Once you know what your triggers are, you can start to develop strategies for dealing with them. For example, if you tend to procrastinate on tasks that you find difficult or overwhelming, try breaking them down into smaller, more manageable steps.

2.  Set clear and realistic goals. When you have a clear understanding of what you want to achieve and when you want to achieve it, you're more likely to take action. Be sure to set goals that are specific, measurable, achievable, relevant and time-bound.

3.  Eliminate distractions. When you're trying to focus on a task, it's important to eliminate distractions as much as possible. This means turning off your phone, closing your email, and finding a quiet place to work.

4.  Reward yourself. When you complete a task or reach a goal, reward yourself with something you enjoy.  This will help you stay motivated and on track.

5.  Seek help if needed. If you're struggling to overcome procrastination on your own, consider working with a leadership coach. They can help you identify the root causes of your procrastination and develop strategies for dealing with it.

Here are some additional tips for leaders who are trying to overcome procrastination with their teams:

  • ~  Be a role model. If you want your team to be productive, it's important to be a role model yourself.  Avoid procrastinating on your own tasks and projects.

~  Delegate tasks. Don't try to do everything yourself. Delegate tasks to your team members and trust them to get the job done. This will free up your time so you can focus on the most important things.

~  Set deadlines and expectations. Make sure your team members know what's expected of them and when they need to complete their tasks. This will help them stay on track and avoid procrastination.

~  Create a positive work environment. When people feel valued and supported, they're more likely to be productive and motivated. Create a positive work environment where your team members feel comfortable asking for help and feedback.

Procrastination is a common problem, but it's one that can be overcome. By following these tips, you can learn to manage your time, more effectively and become a more productive leader.
