How To Achieve Your Goal: 7 Tips for Success

Have you ever set a goal for yourself, but then given up on it after a while?  Maybe you wanted to lose weight, start a new business, or learn a new language, but you found it too difficult or time-consuming to stick with it.

If so, you're not alone.  Many people struggle to achieve their goals, but there are a few simple things you can do to increase your chances of success.

In this blog post, I'll share seven tips for achieving your goals, based on my own experience and the advice of other successful people.  I'll also talk about the importance of patience and perseverance, and how getting a coach can help you achieve your goals.

If you're serious about achieving your goals, I encourage you to read on.  These tips can help you get started on the path to success.

Have Clear Goals

Be clear about what you want to achieve.  I’m sure you’ve heard this before – make your goal SMART (Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant and Time-Bound).  Doing this allows you to be clear about exactly what you want to achieve and by when you want to achieve it.

Break your goal down into smaller, easy-to-action chunks or milestones.  Set dates for achieving each milestone so that you don’t leave room for excuses and can hold yourself accountable.

Do The Hard Stuff

Focus on the things that will make a difference to the goal.  It’s easy to distract yourself with the things that you enjoy doing, but that may not have a great impact on your goal.  Do the hard stuff  - the stuff that you’re not looking forward to doing, but that you need to do to move forward with your goal.

Be Flexible

If something is not working, make the changes that you need to make to get back on track.  Make the changes quickly, if you can.  The longer you take to make the change (or the decision to change) the easier it becomes to put it off and fall back into your comfort zone.

Reflect Regularly

Make the time to reflect regularly - I do this at the end of each month and you can choose the timing that works best for you.  Look at how you spent your time and if those actions had a positive impact on your goal.  Also look at what worked, what didn’t work and how you’re tracking against my goals.  Then try to figure out :

  • What you should focus on for the next month.

3 things you will do differently next month.

What you can do better.

What you should stop doing.

This regular reflection allows you to stay on track with you goal, to adjust anything that you need to adjust and allows you to hold yourself accountable.

Be Patient

Sometimes things take a lot longer than you expect.  I’ve realised that my timelines don’t need to stress me out.  If you do the work, you will see results even if it’s not in the time that you expect.

Keep Trying

Sometimes things don’t work out according to plan.  When that happens it’s  important to take a step back, reflect on why it hasn’t worked and then find different ways to get the results you’re looking for.

Get Yourself a Coach

I have a coaching session every 2 weeks with my own coach.  Coaching gives me the space to really give thought to ideas and actions that I want to take.  It’s been so valuable when it comes to running a business.

Achieving your goals doesn't have to be difficult or time-consuming.  By following the seven tips in this blog post, you can increase your chances of success.

Remember to be clear about what you want to achieve, break your goals down into smaller steps, focus on the things that will make a difference, be flexible, reflect regularly, be patient, and keep trying.
